My dear Linnet and Gene:

Your local Postmaster must be wondering what all these daily letters are all about…

I just had one of the nicest letters I think I ever got, and from the man who is in complete charge of all the passenger transportation on the Milwaukee. I asked him a few days ago what steps he would advise that we take to get your girl through that we haven’t already taken. I am attaching a copy of that letter. And I think it’s a peach.

I’ve picked up some freelance work on the outside, and will be busy night and day for the next week or ten days — and so I’ll have not much time for writing, though you may get wads of clipping. I’ve got a pound or so of them here now.

So far, I’ve got everything done that can be — tickets, instructions — Mary’s suitcase and some assorted surprises to go with it. Mother has made her some little lingerie. I expect we’ll ship the whole works some time next week. We’re going to have a houseful starting Friday for the opening of the Fair, so if Mother doesn’t write, don’t worry about it. She’ll be about as busy as you were with kids and mumps.

See you three weeks from Saturday, Mary!

Love to you all –

Glen

Dear Mr. Shears:

Replying to your letter of May 14th regarding the proposed trip of Miss Mary Huchinson of White River, S.D. to Chicago, who will board our train No. 22 at Murdo MacKenzie at 5:20 a.m. Friday June 8th.

It is noted that you are arranging for her ticket at Chicago, also a single occupancy section on this train.

We will be more than glad to instruct our conductor, sleeping car conductor, agent and Murdo and all others in our employ to render every assistance possible to the young lady whom we know is slightly over twelve years old and on her first long trip. In fact, we will endeavor to surround her with protection and courtesies that will ensure her travelling in complete comfort and security. We will also ask our agent at Mitchell to look after the young lady there at meal time and during the layover at that point.

We are going to ask our agent at Murdo MacKenzie to wire us her departure and the superintendent to keep us posted regarding the young lady while on our line.

We will be very glad to phone you when she has started and regarding her progress.

We assure you that we appreciate this young lady’s patronage as well as the confidence you have placed in our ability to safely conduct her on her first long trip.

Yours very truly,

(Signed) George B. Haynes
